Het +I+wonder+if+that+guy+knows+he%27s+driving+an+XL+Jetta.%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EMy+opinion+on+Audis+changed+quite+a+bit+after+owning+a+VW+GTI+VR6.+Even+at+more+than+110%2C000+miles+on+the+odometer%2C+the+GTI+tracks+straight+and+true%2C+solid+as+ever.+There%27s+a+certain+solidity+that+all+German+cars+have+that+is+very+addictive.+It%27s+not+that+they%27re+actually+better+built+-+the+reliability+is+actually+shameful%2C+and+nothing+compared+to+the+appliance-like+Japanese+cars.+However%2C+the+perception+of+the+solidity+is+still+appealing.+And+so+Audis+are+appealing+to+drive%2C+as+I+found.+But+so+are+higher-end+Volkswagens%2C+and+they+feel+strangely+similar.+We%27ll+have+to+look+at+a+lot+more+to+find+out+whether+the+Audi+A4+is+worth+it.%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EIn+terms+of+driving+dynamics%2C+while+the+A4+is+very%2C+very+good%2C+the+3-series+is+downright+excellent.+Nothing+compares+to+the+rear-drive%2C+50-50+weight+balance%2C+great+steering+feel%2C+engine+sound+and+fun-to-drive+nature+of+the+3-series+for+anywhere+near+its+price.+If+that+is+the+most+important+thing+to+you%2C+your+decision+is+clear.%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3ENot+everyone+looks+at+driving+dynamics+alone+though.+Let%27s+talk+about+styling.+BMWs+look+good%2C+but+I+consider+Audis+and+their+Bauhaus+style+to+be+at+the+very+top+of+mainstream+cars.+It%27s+also+understood+that+Audi+designs+some+of+the+best+interiors+in+the+business.+Fit%2C+finish%2C+colour+choice%2C+everything+is+superb+and+looks+top-notch%2C+better+than+just+about+every+competitor.+If+the+styling+and+interior+are+most+important+to+you%2C+your+decision+is+clear+as+well.%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3ESince+both+cars+are+similarly+sized%2C+it+comes+down+to+value.+The+A4+is+cheaper+than+the+3-series%2C+especially+in+front-drive+four-cylinder+form%2C+but+if+you%27re+looking+at+the+front-drive+4-cylinder+A4%2C+you+should+probably+have+a+look+at+the+Jetta+too%2C+which+offers+the+same+chassis%2C+engine+and+transmission+for+a+lot+less.+On+the+other+hand%2C+you+can+look+at+it+as+a+cheap+way+of+getting+into+an+Audi+%28but+you%27ll+miss+a+lot+of+the+experience%29.+Thing+is%2C+when+you+look+at+a+Quattro+V6+A4%2C+the+prices+are+right+in+line+with+a+3-series%2C+and+the+value+proposition+doesn%27t+quite+look+the+same+when+an+A4+can+go+up+twenty+grand+in+price.%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EI%27d+say+that+on+the+lower+end+of+the+scale%2C+the+A4+is+the+better+choice%2C+and+if+you%27re+going+to+spend+more%2C+go+for+the+3-series van het Audi+A4+Or+BMW+3-Series%3F%7CIn+the+ever+so+popular+entry-level+luxury+car+segment%2C+the+BMW+3-series+is+a+huge+seller%2C+and+the+benchmark.+Audi%27s+A4+has+been+no+sitting+duck+either+though%2C+selling+a+crazy+number+of+units+as+well.+So+which+one+is+really+better%3F%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EWell%2C+I+wasn%27t+big+on+Audis+previously.+I+saw+them+as+glorified+Volkswagens%2C+partly%2C+because+most+of+them+are.+No+companies+can+be+accused+of+platform+sharing+as+much+as+VW+and+Audi.+They+use+the+same+platform+for+the+Jetta%2C+Golf%2C+GTI%2C+Passat%2C+Beetle%2C+A4+and+A6.+They+stretch+it+and+shrink+it+as+necessary%2C+but+it%27s+essentially+the+same+chassis.+So+you+can+understand+why+I+would+look+at+an+A6+and+say….
